A self-serving look at Steve Stroud…
I’m a 59 year old born and raised Virginia boy. I had radio fever at an early age, but in 1980, after relentlessly bugging the PD at the hottest station in town, got my first gig working weekends. I eventually went on to become MD and PD of that station. After leaving, and moving on to another station in the market, I eventually became Program Director and AM Drive, guiding that station to a #1 Arbitron rating.
Years later, I took radio jobs in Winston Salem, NC and Lynchburg, VA, before settling down in Bristol, VA at WXBQ.
Of my 38 years in radio, 31 have been spent in mornings, working in Top 40, Oldies, AC and Country formats, and have been fortunate enough to enjoy some success. In fact, I’ve been #1 for almost 14 years as part of the WXBQ Morning Air Show, and it’s been a blast.
I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with some terrific charities like St Jude, Children’s Miracle Network, Make-A-Wish, Salvation Army, the US Marines, the American Red Cross, Feed the Children and other charitable organizations throughout my career.
I’ve been active in the voice-over business, and have worked for clients like John Deere, Nissan, Bryant Heating and Air, Delta Airlines, etc.
I love Baltimore Orioles baseball, Dallas Cowboys football, and NC State athletics. I also love playing sports, including a few years in adult league baseball. And while sports are great, nothing beats hanging out with my wife of nearly 40 years, enjoying a great meal, and spending time together with my family and friends.
In addition to my terrific wife, I have a very talented 38 year old son who’s an online journalist, novelist and screenwriter. In fact, he’s written and produced 2 Indy films, including one he directed.
Truth be told, I care a LOT about my career and the quality of my work. But at the end of the day, nothing beats the company of family and friends.
Although Cheeseburgers give em a run for their money.
Ben Walker was born in Dothan, Alabama, and raised in North Alabama. Throughout his childhood, he spent his summers in the mountains of East Tennessee. During high school, Ben was looking for a job and walked into a radio station to apply for an on-air position. He read some copy. Ben got his first paying on-air job at WKUL and started his radio career. After high school, Ben joined the Marine Corps and stood on the yellow footprints in Parris Island. After his military service, he went back to radio and has been on the air for almost 40-years.
His radio travels have taken him to many different cities, such as New Orleans, San Antonio, Houston, Milwaukee, and Albuquerque. Ben and his wife, Naomi, and their Jack-Rat Terrier, Shelby, are proud to call Blountville home. When asked, Ben will tell you that it is great to be back home in East Tennessee and working for the greatest radio station in America, WXBQ. Listen for Ben weekdays with Steve on the Morning Air Show from 6am – 10am.
