We, of course, could not have completed this project without the help of the Marine Corps and Reserve. These soldiers not only worked continuously for 72 hours to keep the collection effort moving, but they assembled and distributed the bikes to the children afterward. At Christmas time 96.9 WXBQ joined with the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to collect bicycles for less fortunate children in our area. This first annual WXBQ Rabbit's Bicycle Roundup was a 72-hour (three days) marathon effort conducted at local Wal Mart stores. The Marine Corps manned collection stations at the Wal Mart stores in Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol around the clock for three days. WXBQ aired live broadcasts from each of the collection points. Listeners were encouraged to donate a shiny new bicycles to be given to a deserving children this Christmas. And, hundreds of generous WXBQ listeners responded. Many listeners and friends purchased bicycles and gave them to our campaign. Others contributed cash which was used to buy even more bicycles.
